Ending a relationship is painful, especially if it wasn’t your idea.

You have to expect to go through a period of grief, but you want it to be a brief as possible.  There are ways to get over someone quickly.

A lot of things will influence how long it will take you to recover from a break up.  You can expect a long term relationship to take a little longer than a shorter one to recover from.

Here Are Some Ideas to Help You Recover Quickly

One thing to do immediately is to put away any pictures or other mementos that might remind you of your ex.  Some people recommend that you toss them out, but I don’t think now is the time to decide. At some point in the future after you’re feeling better you may want to have a picture or two around. .

Get a box, fill it with the memorabilia and then put it away.

There are several reasons to do this. A major one is to reduce the number of times you’re tempted to think of you ex and the break up.  Make putting away your pictures and mementos a high priority.

Music wields a powerful ability to bring up strong memories, so you need to be careful about that.  It’s a good idea to  put away the CDs and ignore the play lists on your iPod that remind you of you ex until way down the road when you’re less emotionally vulnerable.

I almost hesitate to make this next suggestion because I generally like to think of myself as a positive person.  But sometimes you do need to note the negative. And this may be one of those times.

Your ex has weaknesses and annoying characteristics like anyone else.  You may be thinking of only the good times and what you’ve lost and ignoring what you’ve gained.  One of the secrets of how to get over someone fast is to notice their clay feet.

Don’t make your ex out to be a villain. Just recall their failings and weaknesses and annoying habits to remind yourself it wasn’t always sunshine and roses with them.

Avoid thinking about your ex continuously by limiting yourself thinking about them for a fixed time every day. You do have control of your thoughts and having a set period will make it easier to let thoughts of them go at other times.

Finally, keep in mind that you’re not the first person to go through a break up. Relationship problems are a fact of life. You will be happy again.
